The Summer of Cicadas

The Summer of Cicadas

**NOTE: This artwork won first place in the "Summer Fun" contest and is quite different from the gory and dark artwork that I usually create. It was relaxing to create a content and peaceful piece**
For me "summer fun" isn't your typical lazy day by the pool or relaxing by the ocean it is instead days spent in walking in the woods (behind the country house I share with my fiance) and nights spent around a campfire with friends/family. Summer to me is the smell of grass and the sound of birds chirping but the most distinct sound is that of Cicadas singing in the trees. The sound is chaotic and synchronized all at the same time and is a short lived experience since it take seventeen years for Cicadas to emerge. The first summer that my fiance and I were together was the summer that the Cicadas came out of the ground and temporarily took over our beloved countryside. To me, that first summer with my fiance will always be remembered as "the summer of the Cicadas" and will always be a fond memory. So, for my interpretation of the "Summer Fun" theme I decided to draw a realistic portrayal of a Cicada insect in graphite pencil. The drawing is a representation of my life in the country and, in particular, a very special, peculiar and fun summer season.
